Why Crop to an Oval Instead of a Circle?
A circle forces a square frame, which cuts off the top of the head or the shoulders on most portraits. An oval keeps the natural proportions of a face while still giving a soft, frameless edge — which is why classic painted portraits, cameos and lockets are oval.
Landscape ovals work the other way round: a wide ellipse can hold a couple or a small group in one frame without the tight crop a circle would need, making it a good fit for wedding invitations, team pages and printed keepsakes.

How do I crop an image into an oval shape?

What is the difference between an oval crop and an ellipse crop?
Nothing — an oval in everyday language is an ellipse in geometry. Both describe a rounded shape that is longer in one direction than the other. A circle is the special case where both directions are equal.
Can I make a vertical (portrait) oval?
Yes. The 3:4 and 2:3 presets produce tall ovals for headshots; the custom slider goes down to 1:2 for an even narrower shape.
Can I crop a photo into a horizontal oval?
Yes. Pick the 4:3 or 3:2 landscape preset, or push the slider up to 2:1 for a wide ellipse that fits couples and group photos.
Will the background outside the oval be transparent?
When you download as PNG, yes — the area outside the ellipse is fully transparent so you can place the oval on any color, photo or document. Choose JPG if you want a solid white background instead.
What size is the exported oval image?
The longest side of the oval is exported at 1024 pixels; the other side follows the ratio you chose. For example a 3:4 portrait oval is 768 × 1024 px.
